February 21 - Day 21
Naturally, I was up around 7:00 and I tried doing some work, but the Internet was not cooperating still. I showered, ate my breakfast, and tried to upload photos while Sleeping Beauty (Bryn) slept in. I have totally and thoroughly exhausted her. She's going to need to take some extra vaction days when she returns. I don't think she realized what she was getting herself into.
Cozumel
Ferry
We got into town and purchased tickets for the 9:00 a..m. ferry to Cozumel. Thankfully, we took Bonine for the trip. The water was so rough and every time we bobbed from side to side and I could see the waves speeding by, I thought that I was going to be sick. I tried not to look out the window, but it seemed like we were going to tip over. The lady with the Patchouli perfume sitting next to me was very nervous that I was going to be sick. (I wouldn't want to sit next to anyone who was going to be sick either.) They did pass out plastic barf bags, however. One little boy two rows up did get sick. I told the father to buy Bonine for the way home. Poor guy had to walk around Cozumel stinking!
The Island
I was so thankful when we arived safely in Cozumel (although I was already nervous about the ride back).
The streets had some new decorations that were really fun. I guess that I would compare them to the cows that Chicago had downtown. There were all sorts of fish with glitter on them.
Bryn and I walked to the end of the main street taking photos of the decorations, then we walked back on the other side checking out all of the shops.
Shopping
I have always thought that Cozumel has had some great deals, but this trip just confirmed that. There were some very good bargains (Bryn even bought quite a bit) and I bought a bathing suit cover-up for $10.00 (nice than the ones that are $28.00-$32.00 in Playa) and a fun necklace.
Friendly People
Everyone was friendlier than in Playa Del Carmen, and they spoke much better English. Even though I would greet them with an "Hola," they would always speak to us in English. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the cruise ship being in port and Carnival taking place (befoe Lent) but it really felt genuine. I never noticed that before.
What's New
Since I've been to Cozumel last, they've opened up a Starbucks and a shopping mall.
Lunch
We decided to scope out lunch spots as we were walking around. We passed a place called "Casa Dennis" that looked really good. I stopped and asked a couple of older gentlemen if they enjoyed their meal, and the one said "no," but his friend said that he's "picky." We were undecided, so we kept looking.
La Mission
The next restaurant that we stumbled across was La Mission. It looked nice and the food sounded appealing.
They give you chips and Picco de Gallo, which was so good. We also got soup, and then, they serve you Garlic bread that was also very good. The bread was very soft and it just had a slight hint of garlic. We had no idea that we were getting so much food!
Bryn had grilled pork and I had Chicken Enchiladas. We practially rolled out of there!
More Shopping
We strolled down all of the streets (going up and down) and we even checked out the new mall.
The Broken Penis
Bryn was admiring a penis statue, when it slipped out of her hands and broke. There was no hiding it because it was too loud and there were two guys nearby. Bryn was so embarrassed, and he made her buy it for $5.00, but he did glue it together for her.
Gelato
We were able to stuff in some Gelato. The Banana Split flavor was really good.
Carnival
We were fortunate to see a few street shows taking place. Stores were decorated and booths were selling beads. The center of downtown was being converted for the evenings events. Vendors were selling food, beverages, clothes, and make-up for the big event. It looked like a lot of fun, but I'm sure it was going to be very crowded and filled with many drunk people.
As it was, we were getting tired. We sat on a bench to rest, but I cannot rest for very long, so I left Bryn there while I looked around the square again.
Ferry
We were so tired at decided that we didn't want to wait another 3-4 hours for the events to begin, so we had a drink at a bar overlooking the ferry dock and then went to buy our tickets. Although the schedule for the Ultra Mar said that it was leaving at 4:00 p.m., they said it was not, so we had to take the Mexican ferry, which I was nervous about (because the Ultra Mar is the newest and largest).
We both fell asleep before the ship even left the pier. It was calmer near Cozumel, but shortly after we got to sea, the boat started rocking again, and I was freaking out knowing that we were bobbing from side to side again.
Next thing I knew, everyone jumped out of their seats and rushed the doors, even opening them. I could see that we were close to Playa, but we weren't quite there yet. I freaked out thinking that the ship was sinking or something and that I slept through it. However, they were just anxious to get back to the mainland (probably returning from work).
Again, I was very thankful when we docked.
The Mechanics
When we walked back to the condo, we saw the one Mechanic with shaving cream all over his face and a cup of water. That reminded me of the customer we had at For Eyes Optical, who came in and shaved while he was waiting to be helped, and then drank the water that he just shaved with!
Rebecca and Saul
We ran into Rebecca and Saul again walking down 5th Avenue. Now, Bryn has met everyone! They were going to Bad Boys bar with Saul's former boss who is visiting.
They are really nice people.
Dinner
We didn't know what we had a taste for and we walked around trying to decide. Finally, we went to Mandarina's, which I like anyhow. There were two kitty's and I fed them the Liver Pate' that they served us. Bryn actually liked it, but I only thought that it was worthy to serve to the kitty's.
We both had a different type of crepe.
Starbucks
It was chilly out again in the evening, so I decided to get a Chai (although I don't know how I fit it anywhere).
La Musica
We thought that we would listen to some music, so we went and sat on the bench across from the Siesta Fiesta hotel for a little bit. We didn't listen very long before we decided to call it a night.
Baloo
Baloo was standing in front of Casa Tucan Hotel again, but he totally ignored me and walked the other way. I told Bryn that he just flipped me off because he could sense that she doesn't like dogs.
I think she thinks I'm strange because I like cats and dogs. She doesn't like anything that "poops."
The Mechanics
As always, they are happy to see us when we walk by!
La Doucha
I told Bryn that I bet she has never taken so many showers. She usually takes like 3 per day!
